The Simple Life: Pour Over Coffee

THE SIMPLE LIFE: POUR OVER COFFEE

A few years ago we unplugged the electric coffee pot, stopped purchasing the prepackaged single serve plastic containers of coffee, and opted for a more environmentally friendly option: the pour over!

Before I delve further into this, let me just tell you, this option tastes so much better than the other! If you've never had a pour over coffee... you must try it!

Sure, you may think "hipster" when you hear "pour over coffee," but my great grandmother was making something similar YEARS ago! You know... before it was cool!

Now, let me explain what I'm talking about...

A pour over coffee is basically created by boiling water and pouring that water over your coffee grounds (placed in a filter inside your pour over basket/funnel) in a slow manner.

To make my coffee, I heat water in a kettle on my stove. While my water is boiling I place a coffee filter into my pour over coffee basket, add the coffee grounds (fresh ground is best), and patiently wait for my water to finish boiling and steam. Now, keep in mind, there is a lot of information online regarding the most accurate temperature, but I make mine by heating water in a kettle on my stove. It tastes great!

Once the kettle begins to steam, I slowly pour it over the coffee grounds in a circular motion. I let the small amount of water filter through and then pour more water. Once my cup is full, I let the coffee filter cool and take both it (with the coffee grounds inside) to the compost pile!

Easy peasy, right!

So, minimal electricity was used, there is not forgetting to turn the coffee pot off, no plastic containers, we use recycled coffee filters, and we have a great cup of coffee while adding to our compost!
